Becoming a morning person is something everyone seems to strive for. Studies show that people who are up early are more proactive, And morning people are generally happier as well.
And if those two facts don’t make you ask yourself “how do I teach myself to become a morning person?” I don’t know what will!
In this blog post, I’ll be going over the steps you can take to get into the routine of becoming a morning person.
1. HAVE A NIGHT-TIME ROUTINE
It might seem silly that the key to why you’re not a morning person lies in the routine you have at night, but it’s true! We all know it’s recommended that we get a full 8 hours of sleep. Of course, everyone is different, but that seems to be the norm.
So if that’s the case for you, you need to be doing things like,
- Going to bed at a certain time
- Shutting off electronics sooner
- Stop working at a certain time
- Do something relaxing before bed like reading, journaling, listening to music ect..
Think about it. If you go to bed at 11 am and you need 8+ hours of sleep, you can get up at 7-8 am. I know for some people, they consider “early morning” 4-5 am but even 7-8 am is still early morning! That’s when I personally get up!

2. SET A TIME TO GO TO SLEEP
We’re all about self-discipline here! If you want to wake up early, you need to make sure you allow your body to get enough sleep!
I know it can be fun to stay up late hours on your phone, scrolling through Facebook. But there are more important things that need to get done in the morning!
3. CREATE YOUR TO-DO LIST THE NIGHT BEFORE
This is a technique I talked about before called the Ivy Lee Productivity Method.
As an added bonus, make your first task of the day something that excites you. Make yourself want to get out of bed and get to your desk because you can’t wait to work on your project!
4. WAKE UP WITH THE SUN

I find that waking up with the sun and letting my body wake up naturally makes me feel so much better. I am in a better mood and feel way more productive than when I am forced awake with an alarm.
If you’re worried you’ll sleep in, set an alarm for the absolute latest time you want to wake up and see if you will wake up before it.
5. GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO WAKE UP
I know a lot of people say you shouldn’t press snooze, you should just jump out of bed and get right to work. However, I find that hard to do. I want to give myself some time to wake up naturally. So I give myself some leisure time by playing on my phone or reading a book first thing in the morning.
If you find it better to get straight out of bed and get to work, then go for it! Whatever works best for you is what you should do.
If you’d like to try my method of staying in bed a bit, but you don’t want to be sucked into Instagram scrolling your day away, set a timer for 10 minutes on your phone. Or however long you think you’ll need to wake up. Get up when the timer goes off. No exceptions.
6. GET DRESSED
This is one thing I *sometimes* follow. Getting dressed out of the clothes you slept in can give you a huge mindset change and productivity recharge. Now, I’m not saying you have to dress your Sunday best to go sit in your office.
However, if you just change out of your PJs into something else, even if it is equally comfy clothing, that can really give yourself the mindset change you need to allow your brain to say “okay. Sleep is over. Time to get to work!”
7. DON’T FORCE IT
This is the best advice I can give. Do not force becoming a morning person. You might be reading this and asking yourself “Can a night owl become an early bird?” And the answer is… sometimes.
If you’ve tried your best to get yourself into a morning routine (try to give it a bit of time. Routines don’t happen overnight!) but you still find yourself wondering why you can’t get up early in the morning. You might be a night owl, and that’s okay.
That is why it is best to find a time of day that works best for you, your schedule and your eternal clock. At the end of the day, not everyone was meant to be a morning person.
And that’s okay. The beauty of blogging and entrepreneurship is that you dictate your own schedule and your own work hours.
Mold your life to fit you, not what everyone else wants. If that was the case, you would be back at your 9-5!
