Setting up your very first WordPress blog can feel confusing and overwhelming, but this quick tutorial will walk you through exactly how to set up your very first WordPress blog step-by-step.
I recommend starting with Bluehost because they’re reliable, budget-friendly, and ideal for new bloggers looking to set up their very first WordPress blog the right way.
In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to set up your very first WordPress blog with Bluehost, from choosing a hosting plan to publishing your first post.
Where should you set up your very first WordPress blog?
There are a few options, but if you want to make money blogging, a self-hosted WordPress site with Bluehost is the best choice.
You might think about starting a free blog, but trust me — it’s not worth it. I made that mistake myself when I began on WordPress.com and quickly saw why my blog didn’t look or perform as well as others.

Choose a Bluehost hosting plan
The first thing you need to do is choose your plan. All you’re going to need is the basic plan, which is $1.99 a month. Compared to a lot of other hosts, this is a fantastic starting price!

Bluehost is super beginner-friendly for brand-new bloggers, so that’s why I like to recommend it. It’s also on the cheaper side of hosting which means it’s budget-friendly enough for you to get started if you can’t invest a ton into hosting right off the bat.
With the Basic Bluehost plan you’ll get:
- The ability to create 10 websites (Although one should be all you need!!)
- A free domain name for the first year
- A free trial for your professional email
- Free SSL certificate (Which helps protect your site- many hosts make you pay for this!)
- Free CDN (Makes your site faster, which again many hosting companies make you pay for!)

Choose a domain name for your blog
After that, you’ll choose the name for your blog! It will let you know if it’s available or not. If you’re struggling to come up with a domain name, check out this helpful blog post right here.
Or, if you already have a domain name, you can transfer it over to Bluehost by clicking “I want to use a domain I already own”. The other option is to choose one later if you’re not sure right now.
Review and complete your order
Next, you’ll need to fill out all of your personal information and complete the purchase. You’ll also choose the length of time you want services.
It’s good to note that the longer you choose your services to last, the more money you’ll save in the long run. I always choose the longest time for myself to save money!
Since I already have a domain name, I didn’t choose that option, so make sure you do if you know your domain name right away!
Login to your Bluehost account!
Bluehost will automatically install WordPress for you during the signup process so there isn’t much more for you to do other than to log into your account!
On the next page, just follow the instructions to put in a password and set up your account. It’s super simple!
Choose a theme for your WordPress blog
On the next screen, it will ask you to choose a theme. If you’re not sure, you can skip this step.
You can also skip this step if you plan to buy a theme and download a custom one yourself. All of my themes were bought on either Creative Market or Etsy, but one of the free themes can also be good to start with!
How to access your WordPress dashboard
Once you log into your Bluehost dashboard, you can click the button up top to log into WordPress:
You can also get to your WordPress login dashboard by typing in http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin. I recommend that you bookmark this page for easy access later. I have my admin link bookmarked for safekeeping.
But, on the off-chance that you forget how to access it, don’t worry! Just head to your Bluehost account to gain access again.

How to start writing your first blog post
Now that your WordPress site is all setup, you can start creating content on it!
It’s important to start putting content out on your site so you can actually get traffic to your blog! And starting a new blog post is super simple.
All you have to do to add a new post is log into your WordPress admin dashboard and head over to the sidebar.
You’ll see where it says “Posts” and when you hover over it click on “Add new post”.
And then from there, you can begin writing your post!
Once you’re done, all you need to do is hit the blue “publish” button in the top right-hand corner and your post is now live!
