Write a blog post that makes money

Writing a Blog Post that Makes Money- Pick a Monetizable Topic

If you want your blog post to make money, it needs to do more than just share a story- it should solve a problem or answer a question your audience is already searching for.

So you can start by asking yourself:
“What does my audience need help with that I can offer a solution to?”

That solution can often lead to a product or service you recommend, either as an affiliate or something you’ve created yourself.

It’s a good idea to have at least one monetizable link in every piece of content you create. Otherwise, you won’t be making much money!

Where to find profitable blog topic ideas:

  • Google Search: Start typing your topic into Google and look at the autocomplete suggestions or “People also ask” section.
  • Pinterest: It’s a visual search engine. Try searching broad terms related to your niche and see what content is already performing.
  • AnswerThePublic: These tools show you real questions people ask around a topic.

Example:

The way you present an idea matters. The mindset of your audience when they are reading the post will determine if they are in a “buying mindset” or not.

For example, if you are writing a blog post on personal finances.

“How to save your first $500 fast” Might lead people to buy your budget tracker. But calling it “My journey to saving $500” might not.

The first title clearly solves a problem and is audience-focused, while the second focuses on just you.

Then, you can recommend budgeting tools, savings apps, or a printable you created.

Always aim to choose topics that align with something monetizable. That way, when your post ranks or gets shared, it’s doing the heavy lifting for your income, too.

Writing posts that are indirectly monetizable

You can also write posts that may not bring you money right then and there, but there is still a monetization plan behind it in the end.

If you have an email list (Which you should!) Your post could lead them to a freebie, which eventually, down the line, leads them to you sending emails about your paid offer.

For example, this is a freebie I offer:

This Pinterest Starter kit has a few different free things in it, and it’s designed to help bloggers grow their Pinterest for more blog traffic.

I use Kit (Formerly ConvertKit) as my email platform, and in the backend, I have sales emails set up so that when someone signs up, the emails get sent out in pre-determined intervals.

This helps me sell my offers in the backend, with no extra work on my part! It’s quite literally passive income!

With those two ways of writing a blog post that makes money, let’s move on.

Do Strategic Keyword Research

If you want your blog post to actually get seen, keyword research is non-negotiable.

It’s how you make sure your content shows up in search engines like Google or Pinterest, without needing to rely on social media or luck.

But not all keywords are created equal. If you’re writing to make money, you want to target low-competition keywords with buying intent.

That means looking for phrases people search right before they make a purchase or take action.

Tools you can use:

  • Ubersuggest or Keysearch (great for beginners and budget-friendly)
  • Google Search (use autocomplete and “People Also Ask” to spark ideas)
  • Pinterest (type your keyword and look at the suggested search bubbles or top-performing Pins)

You want to get a mixture of keywords from different places to find out what works for both platforms. If you want to rank on Google, you need keywords from Google (Which is why I use UberSuggest for that!)

But, you may also want to pin on Pinterest and rank in search there, so you need to figure out keywords that people are using over there as well.

Ask yourself:

  • What would someone Google before buying a product like mine (or one I’m recommending)?
  • Can I answer that question and naturally lead them to the solution?

Example:

Instead of writing a generic post like “Best skincare products,” you could target more specific, buyer-intent keywords like “Best anti-aging serums for dry skin” or “Affordable acne treatments for sensitive skin.”

These are more targeted, likely less competitive, and attract readers ready to purchase products that fit their specific needs, which means more chances to earn from affiliate links or your own product.

Add Affiliate Links Naturally & Strategically

Affiliate links work best when they blend in and genuinely help your reader, not when they feel forced. The key is to place them where they make sense and support your content.

Mention Your Links More Than Once

Don’t just drop a link at the end and hope for clicks. Weave it naturally into the body of your post and reference it more than once. Make the link feel like a helpful suggestion, not a sales pitch.

For example, I would say:

But don’t stop at just the link—give people a reason to click.

Instead of:

“Click here for a money-making ebook.”

Try this:

Inside, I share the exact methods I used to create consistent income, even with a small audience.
If you’re:

  • Tired of working hard but still not earning
  • Struggling to grow fast enough for ads or sponsorships

You can also use helpful post formats like:

  • Tutorials: Show how to use a product step-by-step.
  • Comparisons: Break down the pros and cons between two options.
  • Personal experiences: Share why you recommend it (and what it helped you do).
People are more likely to click when they feel like you actually used it.

Make affiliate links easy to click

Don’t hide your affiliate links in vague anchor text like “click here.” Use full, descriptive phrases, like:

“Check out this legal bundle, which includes a privacy policy, disclosure page, and TOS templates—everything you need to blog legally.“

Also, keep mobile readers in mind—longer, clearer link text is easier to tap on smaller screens.

Always disclose your affiliate links

Speaking of the legal side of blogging, you also need to disclose when you are using affiliate links. It builds trust and keeps you compliant.

A simple sentence like this works:
“This post may contain affiliate links, which means I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.”

Affiliate marketing done right doesn’t feel “salesy”—it feels like a helpful recommendation from someone who’s been there. And that’s what converts.

    Structure the Post for Conversions

How you organize your blog post can make a big difference in turning readers into buyers.

You need to create a post that will keep people reading for long enough to see your links, and trust you enough to buy from them!

    • Introduction:

Start with a hook that grabs attention. Mention the problem your audience is facing and tease the solution you’ll provide. This sets expectations and keeps readers hooked.

Get into the mindset of your readers and consider exactly what they are struggling with and how you can hook them enough to want to read more.

    • Body:

Focus on educating your audience first, before selling to them.

Provide real value, answer questions, and solve their problem. Once trust is built, naturally introduce your affiliate links or product recommendations—promote second, never first.

I prefer to do a “soft-sell” and mention it in a small capacity, just to get the name of the product out there. Then, later down the post, you can do a harder sell.

    • Call to Action (CTA):

End with clear, compelling CTAs. Whether it’s clicking an affiliate link, signing up for a freebie, or buying a product, your CTA should guide readers on exactly what to do next.

Optimize your blog post for search + clicks

To get eyes on your post, SEO matters—but so does click-worthiness. Getting your blog post ranked on Google is important for organic search traffic, or you can get your blog post pins ranking on Pinterest as well!

    For SEO:

    • Use keywords in your title, meta description, and alt text.
    • Add internal links to other relevant blog posts.
    • Format with clear headings for easy scanning.

    For Clicks:

    • Write emotionally-driven titles (think: “How I Made $500 From One Blog Post”).
    • Start with a benefit-focused intro that hooks the reader immediately.

    Promote Strategically After Publishing

Now that your blog post is done, it’s time to share it with the world!

    • Send it to your email list: especially if it connects to a product or freebie.
    • Repurpose it: create an Instagram caption, short video, or pin from key takeaways.
    • Turn it into a YouTube video: I do this often over on my channel!

Focus on consistent traffic sources. You don’t need to go viral- you need to stay visible.

    Track and Improve Performance

Once your post is live, check in regularly to see how it’s doing.

    • Use your affiliate dashboards and Google Analytics to track clicks and conversions.
    • If something’s underperforming, update it with a clearer structure, stronger CTA, or better keywords.

A blog post can grow over time, but also, don’t be afraid to tweak it if you see it’s not getting a high read time!

Final Thoughts: Be Intentional With Every Post

Not every blog post needs to make money, but if you write with strategy, more of them can.

You don’t need a massive audience. You just need the right content, written with a plan.
