We’ve all been there. One day you have a ton of blogging ideas and you’re writing up a storm. And then one day…. You just don’t. So you decide to skip an upload day, and then another one comes around… Still no blog post. You’re in a blogging rut.

What happened?! And how do you stop it?!

I’ve been in a bit of a blogging rut myself lately, and I always use a few techniques to get myself out of it. It’s a hard hole to dig yourself out of once you get into it, but it is possible!

If you’re struggling with a bit of writer’s block, try these tips!

1. Try another creative outlet

The way I like to run my blog is by batching my work. The first week of the month and the 3rd week of the month I spent writing all my blog posts. Therefore, they are all done and out of the way for the month. But, sometimes, I find it hard to get back into the habit of writing after I’ve taken a week off.

I know a week may not seem like a lot, but this is coming from a girl who usually spends everyday writing!

As much as I like writing every day, I found that left me no time for other work that needed to be done on my blog, (the money-making side of things!) which is why I came up with the batching method. But… that ultimately left me falling into a blogging rut week after week.

So I decided to pick up bullet journaling. You can choose whatever creative outlet you want for yourself, but I decided that bullet journaling might be a good thing to try. It gave me the creative freedom to do whatever I wanted in a notebook and honestly, I just like the idea of it.

You can feel free to do whatever else it is you like; draw, paint, read… anything. It’s hard to get the creative juices flowing sometimes. And then when you stop them for an extended period of time, it can be hard to get them going again. So, for me, on the weeks that I am not writing full blog posts, I will be bullet journaling!

2. Don’t limit yourself, just write

This is currently the method I am using to write this very blog post. I haven’t really found the motivation to write in a while. All of the blog post drafts that I had saved up didn’t catch my interest.

I didn’t feel like diving into all of the research-intensive methods that I usually use when I write blog posts.

Then I saw this blog post in my drafts and it piqued my interest a little bit. So, I dove in with none of the usual restrictions or steps I take when writing a blog post and decided to just let myself write.

A lot of it will probably be changed once I add in the research behind the post but… if its something to get me out of the writer’s blogging rut then I’ll take it!

If nothing you’ve written is piquing your interest, just write about anything. Your day, a dream you had, how nice it looks outside, a funny story about your dog… anything to get words on the page.

Once your mind starts flowing with ideas then try drifting back into your topic. Write about something that doesn’t require research or much effort on your part at first as I did.

Just let your mind wander and start typing! Hopefully, that will open your mind back up to writing at the normal level that you do!

My favorite piece of advice about writing is not to be embarrassed by what you’ve written. Because no one will see it unless you hit that publish button or show them directly- so just write! It doesn’t matter what it is. Mistakes will be cleaned up later!

3. Let yourself rest

If you’re in a creative rut, sometimes it’s for a good reason. Maybe your brain just needs time to rest. We work long and hard hours on our blogs, and our brains can sometimes get burnt out.

Take a break, step away from your computer, take a day or even a few days. Practice some self-care routines. Your blog will be there when you get back. Don’t beat yourself up over needing a break, you can’t run at 100% all the time. You’ll come back to it when you’re ready.

4. You don’t always have to write

This is a hard concept for a lot of bloggers, and most of them don’t talk about it. Many will say to just push yourself to write! I’ll even recommend it in some situations. But… sometimes if you don’t feel like writing… just don’t.

I heard one of my favorite YouTubers talk about how he managed to create daily videos for his YouTube channel. He talked about working in creative bursts.

Work when you’re feeling creative, rest when you’re not. It seems simple because it is, but it’s not what a lot of content creators end up doing. We always feel compelled to push out more and more content or create the next big hit.

The cool thing about blogging is that you have the freedom to upload when you want. Sure, it’s good to work on a schedule. Have a goal to post a certain number of days, a certain amount of times a week. This will keep you on track.

But guess what?

If you’re used to posting every Monday at 8:00 pm but you weren’t feeling particularly inspired so you ended up posting Tuesday at 2:00pm. Guess what? There’s a good chance no one noticed!

If you force yourself to create when you just aren’t feeling it, eventually you’re going to find yourself dreading to create the things you once loved! You’ll be basically tricking yourself into hating it!

That’s not to say get in the habit of “oh I’ll post tomorrow, I’m not creatively inspired today” …but then say that every upload day. Some days you might have to crack down and work.

The best way I like to handle this is I try to work so far ahead that I’ll be able to take one, or a few, uninspired days off and no one would notice.

Hopefully, after that you’ll be able to put in some hours writing!
