If you’re starting a blog, you’ve probably wondered: What should my first blog post be about?
You’re not alone—this is one of the most common questions new bloggers ask.
But here’s the truth: your first blog post doesn’t need to be perfect.
In fact, it might not even matter as much as you think!
You’ve probably come across advice like, “Introduce yourself” or “Share your story and who you are” in your first post.
But if you’re hoping to grow and make money blogging, this is one of the worst ways to start.
The reality? No one is searching for that post.
They’re looking for answers to their problems—not your blog’s origin story.
I get it. You’re excited to share your journey and all your big plans. But your first blog post shouldn’t be wasted on that!
You can tell your story on your About page or even sprinkle it throughout your blog later on.
In this post, I’ll help you figure out:
- Why your first blog post shouldn’t be an introduction
- What your first blog post should be about instead

Should you do an introductory blog post?
The short answer: no.
Writing an introductory post about yourself seems like a good idea—but it’s not strategic. That type of post won’t get traffic from search engines or Pinterest.
Why? Because no one’s searching for it.
Think about how you read blogs. When you look up a recipe, do you care about the blogger’s life story? Or do you just want the recipe?
Exactly.
The same goes for your readers. They’re not visiting your site to learn about your blog—they’re trying to solve a problem or learn something new.
Plus, how would you even market that post?
Imagine creating a Pinterest pin titled, “Learn more about me!”
…No one’s clicking that.
And search engines? They have no idea how to rank it because it’s not targeting a real search term.
So instead, save your intro for your About page—where people who do want to know more can find it.
💡 Avoid This!
Many new bloggers waste their first blog post talking about themselves. Don’t fall into that trap—focus on helping your reader first!
What Should Your First Blog Post Be About?
With that in mind, what should your first blog post actually be about?
The truth is, your first blog post doesn’t need to be groundbreaking—it just needs to be useful.
There are better ways to start your blog than with a personal story.
Here’s what I recommend.
Step 1: Know Your Blog Niche and Audience
Before you write anything, get clear on who you’re writing for. What niche are you blogging in? Who do you want to attract?
If you’re unsure about your niche, I have a blog post that can help with that.
But once you’ve chosen your niche, think about who your audience will be—especially beginners.
Why? Because beginners are always searching. They’re asking basic questions and looking for clear answers.
That’s your opportunity to get found.
Step 2: Make a List of First Blog Post Ideas
Next, start brainstorming blog post ideas within your niche. Think about:
- Common beginner questions
- Problems you can solve
- Topics you’re passionate about and have experience with
This is where the real strategy begins.
Once you have a list, it’s time to research: are people actually searching for these topics?
Use tools like Pinterest or Google search autocomplete to find real keywords people use.
Look at all of these ideas I can use for “How to Start a Blog.”

This step is key.
To get blog traffic, you have to speak your audience’s language—and answer the questions they’re already asking. Otherwise, you’ll never get found and never see the blog traffic you want.

Step 3: Do Keyword Research and Adjust Your Angle
Here’s an example from my own experience:
I originally made this blog post a YouTube video titled “Your first blog post doesn’t matter… Here’s what actually does.”
That title worked great on YouTube, but I quickly realized it wouldn’t perform well on Pinterest or Google.
Why? Because no one was searching for something titled that way.
So I changed my blog title to something keyword-focused: “What Should Your First Blog Post Be About? (And Does it Actually Matter?)”
Now it targets real search terms like:
- What should my first blog post be about?
- First blog post ideas
- How to write your first blog post
The content stayed the same, but I reframed the headline and intro to match what people were already looking for.
You can do the same with your posts. You can pretty much write about whatever you want, as long as you come at it from an angle of what people are actually searching for!

Doing keyword research for your first blog post
Let’s expand a little on using keyword research to figure out what your first blog post should be about. This is going to help you get more search traffic from Google, and on Pinterest too!
1. Understand Search Intent:
Start by clarifying the intent behind the keyword you want to use.
For instance, if people search for “What should your first blog post be about?” they likely want help choosing a topic for their first blog post.
You can refine this by exploring variations such as:
- “How to choose your first blog post topic”
- “First blog post ideas for beginners”
- “What should I write in my first blog post?”
When doing keyword research, search for one main keyword and 2-3 supporting keywords. You’ll use the main one to craft your title, and then sprinkle it and the other supporting keywords throughout your blog post and headings.
2. Use Keyword Research Tools:
Utilize tools like Google Keyword Planner, or Ubersuggest to identify related terms. For example, after typing in your main keyword, you might uncover suggestions like:
- “Best first blog post ideas”
- “Blog topics for beginners”
- “How to write your first blog post for a new blog”
This will help you understand the broader landscape and find lower competition keywords with decent search volume.
I also use Rank Math, a WordPress plugin, to ensure I’m doing all the right things once I start writing the post! It gives you a checklist on the side of every blog post so you can make sure you’re doing everything right.

3. Adjust for Long-Tail Keywords:
To better target specific audiences, focus on long-tail variations. Instead of just targeting “first blog post,” consider:
- “How to write a personal first blog post for a lifestyle blog”
- “What to include in a first blog post for a health blog”
Long-tail keywords often have lower competition, which can help your post rank higher!
4. Test and Adjust Over Time:
After publishing your content, you can monitor its performance using Google Analytics and Search Console.
If you notice certain variations of your target keyword (e.g., “beginner blog post ideas”) are bringing in more traffic, you can adjust your content to focus on those keywords more heavily.
You can also update the article periodically to refresh keyword usage and adapt to trends or changes in user behavior!

What Actually Matters More Than Your First Blog Post
As I mentioned in the beginning, your first blog post won’t make or break your blog. What matters way more is building a strong foundation with your blog overall.
Here’s what actually moves the needle:
- Consistency – Posting once is fine, but posting consistently builds trust and momentum.
- Knowing Your Audience – The better you understand who you’re writing for, the better your content will be.
- Clear Branding & Message – From your blog’s visuals to your voice, everything should make readers feel like they’ve found the right place.
- A Strong Content Strategy – Being able to write blog posts that naturally link and lead to each other to keep people on your blog longer
Your first post is just the beginning. What matters more is sticking with it and showing up with value over time.
Blogging Consistently is Key
It’s great that you put out one blog post once, and putting out your first blog post is super exciting. I don’t want to take away from that at all!
But if you want to grow your blog and make money with it– consistency is going to matter more.
Think of blogging as a long-term game, posting like once a week will help build a loyal audience.
And you don’t exactly have to post once a week (although it’s recommended to post 1-2x a week) if you’re consistent with your posting schedule, whether it’s weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, you’ll gain more trust from both your readers and Google.
Trust is important!
Readers will come to expect fresh content regularly, and that consistency will keep them coming back for more.
Plus, consistency gives you more opportunities to refine your voice and optimize your posts for better performance. And it gives you more opportunities to get found.
If you have 10 posts on your blog, all optimized for Google and being shared around on Pinterest, versus the one blog post you started with- you’re likely to get more traffic.
💡Quick Tip: Consistency Builds Trust and Traffic
Consistency is key to growing your blog. Aim to post regularly—weekly or bi-weekly. The more you post, the more chances you have to get noticed by Google and keep your readers engaged.
Stay consistent, and watch your audience and traffic grow over time!
Understanding Your Audience
You might be tempted to write for “everyone,” and write about “anything,” but the truth is, your blog will grow much faster if you have a clear picture of who you’re writing for.
The better you understand your audience’s pain points, desires, and challenges, the more effective your blog posts will be in solving those problems.
Write posts that speak directly to your ideal reader’s needs.
Are they looking for advice? Inspiration? Solutions?
The more personalized and targeted your content is, the more readers will feel like you’re speaking directly to them. And the easier you’ll be able to rank in search.
If you answer the exact question your audience is looking for, Google will be able to rank you for that term, and readers will be more likely to click on your post.
You want readers to think, “This blogger gets me. It’s like they’re talking directly to me!”
💡Remember…
Remember, you’re in competition with every single other person in your niche. It’s a lot of competition. But if you hit your reader’s pain points in a way no one else does, then you’ll see all that traffic for yourself!
Clear Branding & Message
Your blog isn’t just about content—it’s about creating a space that resonates with your audience.
From the visuals (like your blog’s colors and fonts) to your writing style, everything should reflect your blog’s core message and values.
A cohesive brand identity helps readers connect with you on a deeper level, building trust and loyalty. Make sure your tone, your layout, and even your content align with your blog’s mission.
When your branding is clear and consistent, it reassures readers that they’ve found the right place to get the information they’re looking for.
A Strong Content Strategy
While your first blog post is important, having a content strategy is what will truly set you up for success.
💡Quick tip
A strong content strategy means that you know what your next post will be about, how it connects to your past posts, and how it guides your readers toward the next step.
When your posts naturally link to each other, readers will stick around longer, increasing your page views and engagement.
This strategy also helps you map out blog posts that will attract organic traffic through SEO, ultimately leading to more exposure and traffic over time.
I’ve done that in this post, linking you to others along my blog and hoping that it will answer any questions that you have.
This is why I recommended you get a list of posts you want to write about to start.
Once you have that list, order them in a way that they all will build off of each other so you can interlink them together!
Sticking With It
Your first post is just the beginning.
What really matters is your ability to keep showing up and consistently providing value to your readers!
Blogging is a journey, not a sprint. There will be times when you feel like your efforts aren’t paying off, but keep going.
As you continue to post, refine your content, and learn from your analytics, your blog will grow. Trust the process, focus on delivering value, and stay committed to your long-term goals.
Over time, your audience will grow, and your blog will become a trusted resource in your niche!
💡Quick Tip:
In the end, it’s not about having a perfect first post. It’s about building a blog that offers real value, connects with your readers, and stands out in your niche. Stick with it, be patient, and focus on the bigger picture.
How to Write Your First Blog Post That Will Actually Get Traffic
Now that you know what really matters beyond your first post, let’s talk about how to make sure your first blog post actually gets noticed!
When writing your first post, the goal is not only to get it published but also to ensure it attracts traffic from the get-go.
Here’s how you can set yourself up for success.
Do Keyword Research
Before you start writing, take a moment to research the keywords you want to target.
Use tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest. Both of these tools are free, and while there are likely better paid options out there, these are good to start.
Ubersuggest also has a Chrome extension. I use it so that when I’m searching in the Google Search bar, the volume will show up:

While you don’t need to stuff your post with keywords, strategically placing them in titles, headings, and within the content will help you rank on search engines.
For example, if you’re writing a “How to Start a Blog” post, you could target long-tail keywords like “how to start a blog for beginners” or “easy steps to create a blog.”
Choose SEO-Friendly Topics
Your first blog post should address a problem your audience is actively searching for.
Focus on questions they might type into Google like “What should my first blog post be about?” or “How to start blogging from scratch.”
By focusing on SEO-friendly topics that your audience actually cares about, you’ll increase the chances of your post ranking on search engines.
Make It Valuable
When you write your first blog post, make sure it provides clear, actionable value.
Your readers should walk away with useful information that solves a problem or answers a question. This increases your chances of getting shared and linked to, which will help your SEO long-term.
By following these steps and writing with both value and SEO in mind, you’ll set yourself up for success with your first post.
And remember, creating great content is just one part of the equation—building a strategy around that content is what will keep traffic flowing in. Worrying what should your first blog post be about is less important!
