But how do you choose a blog topic? Why do you need a niche? What’s the best blogging niche? And how do you know you’ve picked a profitable niche?
Today, we’ll be going over all that and more!
Table of Contents
WHAT IS A BLOGGING NICHE?
A niche is a general topic that you choose to write about. It’s the basic theme for your blog, the one topic you are an expert in. So, for example, the business of blogging is my niche. That’s the topic- or “niche” – I have decided to write about.

WHAT TYPES OF NICHES ARE THERE?
Any topic that you blog about can become a niche. For example, starting a vegetable garden or cooking. You could become a travel blogger or a photography blog.
The problem, however, isn’t exactly what can you write about, it’s what’s profitable to write about. If you really want to turn your blog into a business, you have to blog where the money is.
WHY DO YOU NEED A BLOGGING NICHE?
A niche is important for a few different reasons, for you and your readers.
While it is highly possible to run a multi-faceted lifestyle blog, as a beginner, these blogs can be hard to monetize. It can also be bad for SEO and attracting readers. So, a niche is good for a few reasons.
1. HAVING A NICHE KEEPS YOU FOCUSED
When you don’t have a niche and your blog about #allthethings it can be super overwhelming to come up with what to write next.
Honestly, for me even with a niche is hard because I have so many ideas to write about! So I can only imagine what would happen if I opened myself up to other topics. Without a niche, you can find yourself thinking,
Do I share my latest pot pie recipe?
What about my DIY pencil case project?
Or I could write about my latest experience in college?
However, if you have a niche blog about cooking, you always know whatever topic you choose will be about cooking in some way.

2. YOU LOOK LIKE AN EXPERT
When you pick a niche you should choose one that you know a lot about. This will show readers that you’re an expert on your topic. But not only that, if you only have one post on your site about a topic, people will be less likely to come back to your blog.
If someone comes to your blog from Pinterest for an amazing pot pie recipe and ends up loving it, they may begin looking around your site for more recipes to try.
But, if they look around and only find posts about your latest Spring break trip, how to study for finals, and the latest DIY craft you came up with. As a matter of fact, you’ve never posted another recipe on your blog after that pot pie one.
it’s likely they’ll leave your blog and won’t come back. Which means you just lost a reader!
3. HAVING A NICHE IS EASIER TO MONETIZE
When you can write about a topic and continually bring readers back to your blog, you’ll build trust with your audience, making it easier to make sales, even in the beginning.
It’s harder to make sales from people who have come to your blog only once. Why should this person trust you? However, if you talk about similar topics on your blog and bring the readers back, they’ll be more likely to buy from you.
This is why it’s important to have a niche.
Let’s look at the last scene again. however this time your niche is only about cooking. Someone finds your amazing pot pie recipe and clicks over to read it.
However, this time when she clicks onto your blog home page everything about cooking comes up! Tons of amazing recipes, cooking tips, and more!
And, on top of that, she finds out you have a cookbook she can buy! If your free content is that great, imagine how awesome your cookbook will be! Sold!
See the difference? And, even if you don’t have a product to sell right off the bat and you are just focused on affiliate marketing for the moment, that’s okay too.
If someone clicks on your blog and finds that you are recommending other people’s cookbooks or cooking tools to her, she is more likely to buy them (from your link) because she trusts you’re an expert in your topic! It’s a win-win.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT BLOGGING NICHES ARE PROFITABLE?
The cool thing about blogging is you can monetize just about any niche! Of course, there will be some niches that are more profitable than others based on popularity. But, as long as you have a buying audience you can make money!
