Creating a mindful morning routine is important to do with how busy our lives can be.
I think the most important parts of our day are right when we wake up and right before we go to bed.
If we’re not careful, life will pass us by in the blink of an eye and we won’t really have even enjoyed it!
With work, school, family, friends, and all other adult responsibilities that we have thrown at us, it can be easy to miss the little joys in life!
That is where a mindful morning routine can come in and help!
Having a morning ritual is beneficial in a lot of ways:
- It can make us more productive and set us up for success
- You’ll be less stressed, and have more time to enjoy the things you love!
- Having a mindful morning routine sets the tone for the rest of the day
- You’ll be more organized and less forgetful
- Have lower stress and more energy
If you find yourself jumping out of bed each morning, eating whatever you can put your hands on first thing (or skipping breakfast altogether!), and barely making it through till lunch each day…
It’s time you considered changing your habits and trying to get into a better routine!
Once I started to slow down and really got myself into a mindful morning routine, I started to feel better, was much happier, and way less stressed.
Here’s how you can set yourself up for success just by changing and adding a few things to your morning routine!

What is mindfulness and why is it important?
Life passes us by so quickly, and many times, we don’t even notice! How many times have you looked at the clock and said “It’s this time already?!”
Living mindfully helps us to slow down, take in what’s happening around us, and ground us.
It allows us to appreciate things we may have missed and take life slower.
This may not be possible in every moment of our lives, and especially not on busy mornings.
But the important thing about living mindfully is not letting every single moment pass us by without noticing.
Even if we just take it slow for a few moments each day, that is better than plowing headfirst into the day and missing so much!
Why should you have a mindful morning routine?
A mindful morning routine is a way to help you get connected to yourself again, a form of self-care.
You may not even realize this is something you need to do with the hustle and bustle of life.
You may even think that you don’t have the time to do this, or that it’s not very important.
But, it is super important and I encourage you to try and make the time.
It doesn’t have to take long or be a huge, complicated list of things you need to complete each morning.
If your mindful morning routine is complicated and stressful, that really defeats the purpose of mindfulness!
You can’t pour from an empty cup.
So, if you burn yourself out, you won’t be able to be your best self at work or excel in your college classes.
You need to make sure you take care of yourself before anyone else so that you can show up as the best version of yourself.
And a mindful morning routine can be the way to do just that!
Creating daily habits for your mindful morning routine
It’s important to understand that these things you’re doing won’t become habits overnight. And they won’t start working right away either.
If you meditate once for 5 minutes one morning, you’re not really going to see much change.
But, if you meditate for 5-10 minutes every morning, you may find you start to feel more relaxed throughout the day and even enjoy your mindful meditation.
Did you know that it takes up to 2 months for a routine to become a habit?
So if you find yourself struggling, just remember to relax and try to stick it out.
You need to create a mindful morning routine that you love and that works for you, but it may take some time to turn it into a habit.
And if you’re like me, and repetition is boring for you, you may find yourself falling out of your morning ritual because of boredom.
So don’t be afraid to have a different schedule for different days, or to switch it up every once in a while to prevent boredom!
How to create a mindful morning routine that you love
Once you’re ready to start getting your routine together, here are a few ideas to get you started!
1. Make mornings as stress-free as possible
In order to be present and in the moment, we need to eliminate stress.
And mornings can sometimes be the most stressful part of our day.
Whether it’s from sleeping in, getting ready for work or school, or being stuck in traffic.
And while we can’t eliminate all stress factors (Traffic, a rude boss or customers) we can do a few things to make it easier.
- Plan out your day the night before
- Charge electronics overnight
- Set your alarm with plenty of time to get ready. If you don’t want to use your phone, try an actual alarm clock! This alarm clock even has a way to charge your phone!
- Pack your lunch the night before, or know what you’re going to eat to avoid deciding in the morning
- Pick out your clothes and have them ready
- If you know you’re doing your makeup, have everything set out and organized
2. Avoid social media first thing in the morning
If you’re a full-time blogger like me or have a similar desk job where you spend all day looking at a screen, it’s important to detach yourself from technology wherever you can.
Especially social media!
So in order to have a more mindful morning routine, try to avoid scrolling Instagram or checking Twitter first thing in the morning.
Our phones can be addicting and starting your day out with your nose in your phone isn’t healthy.
Especially if you’re spending all that time on social media listening to celebrity drama, the news, or hearing a bunch of others’ opinions first thing.
That’s why I like the idea of having an actual alarm clock like this one. It saves you from getting sucked into your phone, and you can even keep your phone in another room this way if you prefer!
3. Try a few mindfulness exercises in the morning
These suggestions may be best for when you have a day off, or if you have extra time in the morning and aren’t waking up to go to work right away.
- Write down things you’re grateful for in a gratitude journal
- Practice a calming yoga or light workout session
- Just regularly journal down your thoughts or what you plan to do that day
- Read a self-help book or one of your favorite books
- Spend some extra time cooking a breakfast you love
- Listen to your favorite music
- Say positive affirmations to boost your mood
4. Don’t jump out of bed first thing
Try not to hit your alarm and jump out of bed first thing in the morning.
Again, this isn’t going to be practical every day, but try it if you have a slow Saturday morning.
Take some time to allow yourself to wake up, and assess how you feel.
You can always journal if you want, or you can just let your thoughts wander.
Enjoy the feel of just being in your comfy bed and slow down before you need to start your day.
Maybe take some time to map out what you’d like to do, without it turning into a stressful list.
You don’t want to sit there in a panic thinking about all the things you want to accomplish.
You can take some time to be grateful, for waking up, for feeling good, for your spouse or kids…whatever you want.
5. Hydrate yourself
You just spent the last 6+ hours sleeping (maybe snoring) so make sure you hydrate!
I know it’s common to wake up and start having caffeine, but don’t forget we need water as well!
I’ve been drinking a lot more water ever since I got this custom tumbler from Etsy and this Purr water filtration that fits in my fridge.
If you have easy access to cold water like you do with the Purr water filtration dispenser, you’re more likely to drink water!
I know that’s how it went with me.
6. Eat a good breakfast
Your body needs fuel to go about your day. You need energy.
And skipping breakfast because you don’t have time is depriving your body of the nutrients it needs!
So make sure you eat a good breakfast.
You don’t have to go all out every single morning with pancakes, eggs, fruit, toast, and whatever else we see in the movies.
But something better than a granola bar would be good!
7. Get yourself ready for the day
Now you can get yourself ready and prep for the day.
Enjoy your coffee, tea, or whatever else you normally drink.
Put on makeup, take a shower, or whatever it is you need to do this morning to prep for the day ahead.
And while you’re getting ready, you can get your headspace into a good place as well!
Say some positive affirmations, or manifest the type of day you want to have. Your mind is a powerful tool- make sure you use it!
Remember, it may take some time to fall into a routine, and even find one that you like!
So don’t be afraid to try a few of these suggestions out until you find a mindful morning routine that works for you!
